SAT Digital — Calculator and Desmos Strategy Exam: SAT (Digital, Bluebook Platform) Last Updated: June 2026 --- ## Overview The digital SAT (launched March 2023) includes a built-in Desmos graphing calculator available during all SAT math questions — both Math Module 1 and Math Module 2. This is a significant change from the paper SAT, which had a no-calculator section. Understanding when and how to use the built-in Desmos effectively can save significant time and eliminate common algebra errors. However, over-relying on the calculator for trivial arithmetic wastes time and can introduce input errors. --- ## The Built-In Desmos Calculator Access: Click the calculator icon in the upper right corner of the Bluebook interface during any math question. Type: Desmos graphing calculator — the same tool available free at desmos.com/calculator. Available on: ALL math questions in both modules. There is no "no-calculator" section on the digital SAT. > Exam Tip: Just because the calculator is available on every question doesn't mean you should use it on every question. Reaching for Desmos for 2 + 3 or basic fraction arithmetic wastes 15–30 seconds per question, which compounds significantly across 44 questions. --- ## When to Use Desmos vs. Mental Math ### Use Mental Math (No Calculator) When: | Situation | Example | |---|---| | Simple arithmetic | 18 × 4; 144 ÷ 12; 15% of 80 | | Basic fraction operations | 3/4 + 1/2; 2/3 × 9 | | Powers of small integers | 2^5; 3^3; 5^2 | | Evaluating simple expressions | If x = 3, find 2x + 7 | | Unit conversions | 60 minutes = 1 hour; 12 inches = 1 foot | | Percent…
