# Word Knowledge: Your Highest-Leverage AFQT Skill Word Knowledge (WK) carries double weight in the AFQT formula — improving your WK score is one of the fastest ways to boost your enlistment eligibility score. --- ## Why Word Knowledge Matters So Much The AFQT score that determines whether you can enlist at all is calculated as: > AFQT = AR + MK + 2(VE) where VE (Verbal Expression) = WK + PC This formula is defined by the Department of Defense / USMEPCOM (the agency that administers the ASVAB at MEPS). The four AFQT subtests are Arithmetic Reasoning (AR), Mathematics Knowledge (MK), Word Knowledge (WK), and Paragraph Comprehension (PC). The remaining six subtests (GS, EI, AI, SI, MC, AO) feed branch-specific line scores but have zero effect on AFQT. On the CAT-ASVAB, WK has 15 scored questions and a 9-minute time limit (without tryout items). Because Word Knowledge feeds into VE, and VE is multiplied by 2, every point you gain on WK is worth twice as much to your AFQT as a point gained on, say, Auto Information. No other single subtest gives you this kind of return on study time. This is why Word Knowledge is the #1 study priority in the AFQT framework. --- ## The Two Question Formats The WK subtest presents vocabulary in two distinct ways. Knowing both formats prevents surprises on test day. ### Format 1 — Direct Definition > *"What does the word* belligerent *most nearly mean?"* > (A) peaceful (B) hostile (C) confused (D) ambitious You are given a single word and must choose the best…
